How To Attract The Right Talent When Advertising Your Next Vacancy

Ask any business leader worth their salt, and you will get the same response; the recruitment game is a difficult one to master. This is particularly prevalent if you are a small business owner - attracting talent and managing to keep hold of them is one of the most difficult things to accomplish. After all, you don't have the big budget to offer huge salaries, bonuses and all of the other perks that large corporations can hand out.

However, there are other ways to attract the right people to your company. These article highlights some of these in detail.

It all starts with the right job advert (in the right place)

There are several ways to do this. You can talk to a recruitment agency, post a notice up on a job site or advertise in a local magazine. All of these work well to a certain extent.

The most cost-effective method for small business owners is to take the DIY approach and post to a job board yourself. This allows you to bypass expensive recruitment agency fees and instead dedicate that resource to what matters the most – the employee (or potential employee) themselves.

It's not all about the salary

Whilst you might not be able to offer big bonuses and wage increases, there are other ways to show your appreciation and attract the best employees. For example, you could:

  • Offer flexible working hours and/or the ability to work from home. This is something that doesn't directly cost you anything and, for many businesses (particularly in a post-Covid world), is completely possible.

  • Provide good quality food and drink. If you look around a lot of job adverts, you'll see many that offer free breakfast or free food and drink. It sounds small in the small print, but as potential workers mull over their options, it's perks like this that add up.

  • Provide discounts and/or other benefits such as childcare vouchers or season ticket loans. There are also many government initiatives you can tap into which make perks like this easier on your cash reserves.

  • Promote staff discounts. Not all industries are going to appear 'attractive' from a staff discount perspective, but as we have already alluded to, it's smaller benefits like these that can make all of the difference.

Show off your culture

We've spoken about benefits, but something you shouldn't underestimate is company culture.

How can you achieve a great culture? You could be known for throwing the best Christmas parties, having employee recognition schemes or even hosting regular teambuilding days. If you can prove that yours is an inviting place to work, it can make a world of difference to many candidates, particularly if they're moving from a toxic environment. We hope this advice helps you get the right people applying for positions in your company!
